Zirconium Crowns

Overview

What is a Zirconium Crown?

Zirconium (zirconia) crowns are very strong dental crowns and they are ideal for bridge work. Zirconium crowns are getting more and more popular amongst other types of crows as they are extremely durable, natural looking and 100% biocompatible. Zirconium has been evolving into formulations with greater translucency and strength.

In case of a secondary caries (tooth decay) underneath, it is almost impossible to remove a zirconium crown without destroying it for an intervention in most cases. Thanks to the special adhesive we use, this is not a concern for our patients.

Benefits of Zirconium Crowns

  • Zirconium crowns are natural looking as they mimic the translucency of your natural teeth. They reflect the light the same way as your natural teeth. They also can be transformed to any shade, shape and size matching the rest of your teeth.
  • Unlike, porcelain fused to metal crowns, zirconium crowns are metal free and they don’t corrode over time. In addition, they have no aesthetically unpleasant metal lining at the gum line if the gums recede.
  • Zirconium is 100% biocompatible. It is unlikely to have any adverse effects or allergic reactions.
  • Zirconium crowns are extraordinarily tough and durable. They tolerate biting forces well and withstand wear and tear. Unlike porcelain, they don’t chip off.
  • Thanks to the low electrical conductivity of zirconium crowns, they don’t cause any teeth hypersensitivity when eating/drinking hot and cold food and beverages.
  • Zirconium crowns bond well to your teeth and they are minimally invasive, meaning they require less tooth removal than many other types of dental crowns.
  • Zirconium crowns are gum-friendly and don’t release ions that can colour dental gingiva.

Procedure

1 st Appointment

  • Clinical examination including matching the shade of the crown with your natural teeth, evaluation of the X-Ray and consultation.
  • Administration of local anaesthetic.
  • Preparation of the tooth by removing a small amount of tooth structure.
  • Taking an impression of your tooth by means of an intra-oral camera or conventional mould filled with dental paste which you will be asked to bite into. The impression will be then sent to our on-site dental laboratory where your crown will be fabricated.
  • Placement of a temporary crown until your permanent crown is ready. Avoid sticky or hard food and avoid chewing from that side until your final fitting appointment.

2 nd Appointment

  • Checking the fitting in terms of bite, size, shape and colour. When the results are satisfactory, the crown can be polished and cemented at the second appointment in some cases.

3 rd Appointment

  • Final adjustments, polishing and permanent fixing of the crown. One or two extra appointments might be arranged for perfect fitting where needed.

Choosing the Right Zirconium Brand for Your Restoration

Aesthetics is not the only reason to choose the right brand for your restoration. We recommend discussing both options with your Cosmetic Dentist before making any decision as many other factors such as structure and form of the teeth, location and purpose of the restoration are involved.

FAQ

Why Choose Zirconium Crowns?

Zirconium or zirconia is biocompatible, non allergic, non conductive material with unique specification of letting light pass through so that the crown looks like a natural tooth. Zirconium, zirconia also provides the extra comfort of not breaking or chipping over a long period of time.

Porcelain has been the traditional material used for dental crowns. Full porcelain crowns however may chip or break. This is overcome by making the crowns from metal, in this case the metal being zirconia, then fusing porcelain to the outside.

What to Expect After You Have Your Zirconium Crown?

Right after your new crown is cemented, you may experience some sensitivity to cold. This is normal because the tooth and the surrounding area might be slightly irritated during the procedure. You might also feel that your bite is off in the first couple of days. If the “off” feeling still persists after that, it might require a slight adjustment.

It is very important that you maintain excellent oral hygiene with your new crown or bridge. A crowned tooth might give you the wrong impression that it won’t decay like your natural teeth, but it is still susceptible to decay near the gumline. You should continue to brush and floss as normal.

Zirconium crowns are very strong but they still have potential to fracture the same as a natural tooth. Avoid doing anything with a crown or bridge that could damage a natural tooth. Do not chew ice, as extreme temperature changes may increase the fracture of crowns and natural teeth.
