What is a Glass Ceramic Crown?

This type of crowns is based on lithium disilicate which is a glass ceramic. Glass ceramic crowns are rapidly gaining widespread popularity in cosmetic dentistry due to their excellent aesthetics, durability, and strength. They are most suitable for your front teeth.

Benefits of Glass Ceramic Crowns

  • They possess an ideal blend of translucency and lifelike appearance, that makes them suitable for restoration of front teeth. They are more translucent than zirconium crowns.
  • They don’t contain any metal alloy. This means that a grey line of the underlying metal will not be visible at the gumlines.
  • They have excellent durability and they are resistant to crack, fracture or chip.
  • Since they possess excellent strength and fracture resistance, these crowns can be prepared in very thin sections. This not only ensures optimal aesthetics, but also requires minimal removal of natural tooth structure during preparation allowing your tooth to stand stronger.

Procedure

1 st Appointment

  • Clinical examination including matching the shade of the crown with your natural teeth, evaluation of the X-Ray and consultation.
  • Administration of local anaesthetic
  • Preparation of the tooth by removing a small amount of tooth structure.
  • Taking an impression of your tooth by means of an intra-oral camera or conventional mould filled with dental paste which you will be asked to bite into. The impression will be then sent to our on-site dental laboratory where your crown will be fabricated.
  • Placement of a temporary crown until your permanent crown is ready. Avoid sticky or hard food and avoid chewing from that side until your final fitting appointment.

2 nd Appointment

  • Checking the fitting in terms of bite, size, shape and colour. When the results are satisfactory, the crown can be polished and cemented at the second appointment in some cases.

3 rd Appointment

  • Final adjustments, polishing and permanent fixing of the crown. One or two extra appointments might be arranged for perfect fitting where needed.

Choosing the Right Glass Ceramic Brand for Your Restoration

FAQ

What Are Some Common Uses of Glass Ceramic Crowns?
  • Stained teeth: Glass Ceramic crowns and veneers are excellent for stained teeth and they have resistance against facture and chipping.
  • Crooked or fractured teeth: Teeth can be restored and reshaped using Glass Ceramic crowns especially in the anterior region.
  • After root canal treatments: Teeth can become brittle after root canal treatments. Glass Ceramic crowns are a great choice to restore those teeth as they offer excellent strength and durability.
What Are The Benefits?
  • Durability and Strength: Glass Ceramic are made of lithium disilicate; a glass ceramic that possesses excellent strength. These crowns are less likely to crack or fracture.
  • Appearance: Due its translucency, it’s the best match for your natural teeth.
  • All-ceramic: Glass Ceramic crowns do not have a metal alloy base so they won’t be visible under gumlines.
  • Conservative: Due to their resistance to fracture and chipping, Glass Ceramic crowns can be prepared in thin sections so only a minimal amount of natural tooth structure is removed during the preparation.
What to Expect After You Have Your Glass Ceramic Crown?

Right after your new crown is cemented, you may experience some sensitivity to cold. This is normal because the tooth and the surrounding area might be slightly irritated during the procedure. You might also feel that your bite is off in the first couple of days. If the “off” feeling still persists after that, it might require a slight adjustment.

It is very important that you maintain excellent oral hygiene with your new crown or bridge. A crowned tooth might give the wrong impressions that it won’t decay like your natural teeth but it is still susceptible to decay near the gumline. You should continue to brush and floss as normal.

E-max crowns are very strong but they still have potential to fracture the same as a natural tooth. Avoid doing anything with a crown or bridge that could damage a natural tooth. Do not chew ice as extreme temperature change increases the fracture of crowns and natural teeth.
